Barcelona pays 20 million euros to sign Jeremy Mathieu
FC Barcelona have finally signed a defender to their team, after agreeing terms with Valencia CF in order to bring Jeremy Mathieu to the Condal City. The 30-year old plays preferably as a left-back, but he’ll also be able to occupy the centre-defender role if needed, a position which the Blaugranas are still in desperate need to strengthen.
With Puyol retiring and the notorious lack of options for center defenders inside the squad, Barcelona was obviously on the market (and probably still is) for players who can play in that position. Even though Mathieu is not likely to become a regular starter in the center of the defense, he’ll certainly prove himself useful due to his versatility on the pitch.
After several weeks of rough negotiations, Barcelona agreed to pay Valencia a transfer fee of 20 million euros for signing Jeremy Mathieu. The money will be split into 2 payment stages, with the first 10 million euros being sent right away, while the remaining 10 are be expected to be paid as the season goes on.
Mathieu arrives to Barcelona after having played 5 seasons for Valencia, a period in which he had 177 appearances and scored 7 goals for “Los Che“. The French international now signs a 4-year contract with the Blaugrana and will have a buy-out clause set at 50 million euros. Not bad for a 30-year old…
