Probably the worst “panenka” penalty ever…

by

Atletico Madrid have recently faced the San Jose Earthquakes as part of their United States pre-season tour, but while most of the attention is being brought to the final score (a goalless 0-0 draw at the end of regular time) and how well the new players have done in that match, we decided to switch the focus to something else…

As we just mentioned, the two sides couldn’t go beyond a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes of football. As it happens in many summer tournaments out there, in order to untie the game after a draw takes place in the end of regular time, the two teams go into a penalty shootout decision.

It was precisely there that one of the funniest and most embarrassing moments in Miranda‘s career took place. The Brazilian center defender was picked as one Atletico Madrid players to step up to the mark and take a penalty kick, and for some reason, he decided to stun everyone at the stadium by doing a “panenka“… It couldn’t have gone more wrong!

A “panenka” is a sort of a technique used to take penalty-kicks, where the player simply tries to kick the ball from below and lob it slightly towards the middle of the goal, hoping that the goalkeeper throws himself to one of the sides. It was baptized after Antonín Panenka‘s famous penalty-kick in the EURO Championship final of 1976 against the West Germany, where the former Czech player scored the winning goal in fashion style.
